About SBI
Small Business International (SBI) was founded in 1991 as the Home Business Institute. It provided services, benefits, information and discounts to home base businesses. Subsequently, the Small Business Institute was formed to service a broader spectrum of small and medium sized businesses working both from home and in the field. Both Institutes provided services and benefits to over 80.000 US businesses.
David Hanania the CEO of the Home and Small Business Institutes initiated research projects to seek a more active role for the Institutes in helping small businesses. The role that health insurance and exporting played in the lives of small businesses was studied. The research ultimately led to the fact that, despite their desire for new business sales opportunities, many potential small business exporters harbor misperceptions of the difficulties and financial risks involved that causes most not to pursue viable export markets.
This research project led SBI into divesting itself of memberships, closing the Institutes and redirecting itself into a company whose business objective was to identify and then assist Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) seeking to enter or expand in the Global Export Market. The new company was named Small Business International.
